Welcome to Reciprocal Space!
Electron Diffraction Made Easy

Apple Design Award 2007
SingleCrystal is an elegant program designed to make diffraction, reciprocal lattices and stereograms intuitive, interactive and fun...

SingleCrystal works with CrystalMaker, reading from saved crystal files to simulate and display electron diffraction patterns on screen. You can open a crystal file in SingleCrystal, or use CrystalMaker's Transform > Diffraction Pattern > Single-Crystal command to obtain a single-crystal diffraction pattern or reciprocal lattice section, for any displayed crystal structure.

Need Powder Diffraction? Try our CrystalDiffract program for x-ray or neutron powder diffraction.

Measure and Explore. SingleCrystal lets you display Miller Indices, measure distances and angles between diffraction spots - and even display the phases of reflexions, using colour-coded spots!

Phase angle display 6-fold or 3-fold symmetry? Simulated diffraction pattern for the [001] zone of Millerite (NiS). Reflexions are coloured according to their phase angle, starting at red (0 degrees) and progressing in hues through to cyan (180 degrees).

Real-Time Control. SingleCrystal lets you rotate your crystal in real time, by clicking-and-dragging with the mouse, clicking toolbar "tilt" controls, or using the keyboard.

Precise tilts can be entered, or specific view directions specified. Other controls allow you to change the scale (camera constant), saturation, sample thickness, wavelength and other diffraction controls.

Stereographic Projection
To help you navigate through diffraction space, you can take advantage of a live stereographic projection ("stereogram") which slides out in a drawer window at the side of the main diffraction window.

The stereogram shows the angular positions of plane normals or lattice vectors (zone axes) plotted as poles and optionally as great circle traces - and is fully customizable.

SingleCrystal Interface

Simulating electron diffraction from scapolite. The crystal orientation is close to [-1 -1 -1]. An angle measurement is visible and the stereogram drawer is open.

Free Demo Version. SingleCrystal is available online with examples files, searchable online help, and detailed PDF user's guide with tutorial chapter.

The software comes in two flavours. With the free, Demonstration Version, you can:

  • Simulate electron diffraction for any crystal
  • Visualize sections of the reciprocal lattice
  • Display stereographic projections, showing the orientations of lattice planes
  • Rotate interactively or via menu commands
  • Measure and index a pattern

The demonstration version can be unlocked, via a licence code, to reveal the full-feature version. This includes the ability to superimpose a simulated diffraction pattern over an image of a real diffraction pattern, copy diffraction patterns and stereographic projections in high-quality PDF format, export diffraction data to text files, print, and much more...

Cross Platform. SingleCrystal is available in two separate versions, for Windows (XP/Vista/Windows 7), or for Mac OS X (Snow Leopard/Leopard/Tiger).

Runs with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7

Mac OS X Universal

Mac and Windows versions share the same binary file format, and similar feature sets, making cross-platform working and collaboration easy!

Each version is designed, from the ground up, for its respective operating system, offering genuine operating system support and maximum performance - with no compromises.
